Al-Abadi: Delays in budget aimed at undermining government

The senior Islamic Dawa Party member and head of the parliamentary committee on Economics, Investment and Reconstruction, Dr Haider Al-Abadi, has said that ongoing delays with the approval of the Federal Budget Law in the Council of Representatives is a result of concerted efforts by some political blocs to undermine the government.

Discussions over the Iraq’s budget for 2010, which amounts to nearly 70 billion dollars, have reached a deadlock, after some blocs declared that they would only vote

in favour of the law if it were bundled with the Law on Electoral Conduct.

IDP parliamentarians have argued that further delays in passing the budget would seriously undercut Iraqi ministries in delivering essential services and strengthening Iraq’s security forces. With nearly 20 billion dollars allocated for investment, the budget law is a critical part of efforts to fuel the reconstruction process in Iraq.

The Islamic Dawa Party is concerned that with elections only six weeks away, some political parties are attempting to abuse their positions in Iraq’s legislature for political gains. Any attempt to restrict the Iraqi government’s capacity to govern will be at the expense of the welfare of ordinary citizens.
